The Sermon on the Mount

The Sermon on the Mount

This Sunday begins a five week series on The Sermon on the Mount as recorded in Matthew's Gospel (chapter 5).   We begin with the readings in 5:1-12 which are called The Beatitudes.    These are powerful words.   They speak to us of God's blessings.    Still, we often don't hear what Jesus is really saying.   Too often, we hear the words as something that we have to obtain or do.

What Jesus is really saying here is that we are already blessed because of who we are and not for who we are becoming.   It is most clear in the words, "Blessed are they who mourn for they shall be comforted."    When we are sad or sorrow filled, God blesses us, comforts us and holds us.    It is not that we have to become this way, but when life brings us sadness, GOd is there to bless us.

So, it is with those who are poor - God reaches out and blesses them.

God blesses us - not because we have earned it - but because God loves us.

I look forward to sharing this reading this Sunday.   In the weeks to come, may we sit down and hear what Jesus has to say to us today.

Blessings - Jeffrey
